The Government has confirmed an additional £1.5 billion to fund the construction and improvement of housing for armed forces personnel and their families.
Launched as part of the externally-led Strategic Defence Review, this funding announcement follows a January report by the National Audit Office, which uncovered “historic underinvestment, cost increases and inflationary pressures” on the UK’s military housing estate.
The new £1.5 billion is set to help drive urgent repairs and long-term improvements across the UK’s military accommodation, such as boiler replacements, roof fixes and damp remediation.
The new funding package will also support the building of new homes for military personnel on Ministry of Defence (MOD) land.
This additional funding brings total investment in military accommodation to more than £7 billion this Parliament.
Other construction highlights in the Strategic Defence Review include plans to build new munitions factories, modernisation of infrastructure at the Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE), and £1 billion of investment in digital capability and infrastructure – as well as thousands of new construction jobs and apprenticeships.
